WEEKLY MEDITATION

Chaos demands to be recognized and experienced before letting itself be converted into a new order.
-Hermann Hesse

A life built around addictive patterns is necessarily chaotic. The deeper the commitment to one’s addictions, the deeper the chaos and inability to commit to the elements in life that create order. When seeking recovery from our addictions, it is helpful to begin with truly acknowledging the level to which they have infiltrated our lives. One of the easiest ways to do this is to acknowledge the level of chaos that has been created by them. If we can honestly admit to this chaos, it can help motivate us to commit to a path of growth. Addictive patterns are difficult to challenge—the mechanics that resist change are built right into them. So it is helpful to create motivation by admitting to ourselves how the chaos and disorder have kept us from what we want from our lives. If we can accept just how chaotic our lives are, we may be more inclined to commit to creating a new order—a new way of processing and facing the underlying discomfort that our addictions attempted to address.
