WEEKLY MEDITATION
The best way to predict your future is to create it.
-Peter Drucker
This quotation is a reminder that we are key in the creation of our own lives. It is a reminder that we are not simply victims to circumstance or mere participants in what is happening to us. While mired in active addiction, we often become passively tethered to the pursuits associated with feeding these insatiable drives. Although we are no less involved in the creation of our future lives, we are certainly less consciously involved. Perhaps the most important consequence of shedding our addictions is that it restores—or creates for the first time—the possibility of consciously choosing the path that our lives take. Letting go of addictive patterns lays the groundwork for assertive decision making and movement toward a more deliberate life. Of course, the initial shedding of our primary addictions does not guarantee that we will live consciously, but it creates the possibility for the kind of emotional growth that can lead to this ability. In each moment, minute, hour, and day, it is important to remember that we are creating our future through the decisions and attitudes that we adapt in the present.
